Hyperion

Today I would like to start talking about Hyperion as this would help me and a few of us to share of what we know about this Business Intelligence tool.

However what dose come to any ones mind when we hear the word “Hyperion”

Hyperion is a name of a Greek god…

Hyperion is a name of a moon of Saturn.

However we are going to talk about Hyperion Solutions Corporation it is a business performance management software company.

Hyperion was acquired by Oracle Corporation on 19th April 2007.

Just some History about the company:

Began as IMRS acronym for Information Management Reporting Services… in 1991 it went public on the NASDAQ. The company wanted a makeover a change in the name.

The company could effectively relaunch its products with a newer, sexier brand name. Seeking to highlight the hypertext capability which allowed a user to access information about a particular topic simply by clicking on the title of that topic, a look in the dictionary for words which began with hyper-, gave in the name of the titan Hyperion, a quasi-divine figure from Greek mythology who ruled over the sun, moon, and stars. Whereas "IMRS" was a liability because it was not memorable, the name Hyperion stuck in people's minds, and that was why, four years later, the entire company changed its name to Hyperion.

Over the years, Hyperion has built a number of product and service lines, among which are Hyperion Enterprise, Hyperion Pillar, and Hyperion OLAP. Hyperion Enterprise is an application for consolidating business information and reports, bringing together numerous ledgers into a single unified whole. Development began in mid-1988, and the product debuted in July 1991. In the three years leading up to 1997, when Hyperion released its fifth edition of Hyperion Enterprise, the product accounted for some 60 percent of the company's worldwide revenues.

As mentioned before Hyperion was acquired by Oracle Corporation on 19th April 2007.
